Ch. 1: Matter

Matter occupies space and has mass. Three states — solid, liquid, gas — differ in particle arrangement, force and motion. Energy is not matter. States change by heating or cooling (melting, boiling, condensation, freezing, sublimation).

# Matter — Super Simple (with pictures in your mind) **Matter** is anything that takes up **space** and has **mass**. - Your book is matter. - Water is matter. - **Air** is matter too (even if you cannot see it). - **Heat, light, sound, electricity** are **energy** — **not matter**. ### Three “costumes” of matter 1. **Solid** — keeps its shape (ice, wood, coin) 2. **Liquid** — flows, takes the container’s shape (water, oil) 3. **Gas** — spreads out (steam, air, oxygen) ### Particle story Everything is made of tiny **atoms**.
