Why don’t all computers look the same?

# Types of computers Not every computer looks like a school desktop. ## Common types - **Desktop** — sits on a table, powerful, used in labs - **Laptop** — portable computer with a keyboard and screen - **Tablet** — touch screen, great for reading and drawing - **Smartphone** — tiny computer in your pocket - **Server** — a powerful computer that serves many people (like a website) - **Supercomputer** — used for huge science problems (weather, space) ## Embedded computers A washing machine, car dashboard, or traffic signal may hide a small computer inside. You do not “open Windows” on them — they do one job very well. ## Choose the right tool A phone is perfect for a photo. A laptop is better for a long essay. A lab desktop is great for coding practice. > Everyday example: booking a train ticket uses your phone (client) and a big server computer far away. ## Client and server — learn this pair now When you open a website: - **Client** — your phone / laptop (asks for the page) - **Server** — a powerful computer that keeps the page and answers many clients Booking a train ticket: your phone is the client; IRCTC’s computers are servers. ### Embedded vs general A general computer (laptop) can run many apps. An embedded computer (car ABS, rice cooker) is built to do **one** job well. You do not install a game on it. ### Choose on purpose | Job | Sensible tool | | --- | --- | | Long essay / coding | Laptop or lab desktop | | Photo + short message | Phone | | Reading a PDF on the sofa | Tablet or phone | | School website for 800 students | Server | | Predict a cyclone | Supercomputer |

By the end of this lesson

Match a job to the right kind of computer (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone, server, embedded, supercomputer).

Remember

  • Desktop — table, powerful, school labs.
  • Laptop — portable keyboard + screen.
  • Tablet — touch, reading and drawing.
  • Smartphone — tiny computer in a pocket.
  • Server — serves many people (websites, school login).
  • Embedded — hidden chip that does one job (washer, car, traffic light).
  • Supercomputer — huge science problems (weather, space).

Worked examples

Cover the answer. Try the steps on paper, then open them.

Example 1 — Pick the tool

Write a 2000-word project; snap a photo of the board; hide a chip in a microwave.

  1. Project → laptop or desktop (keyboard).
  2. Photo → smartphone or tablet.
  3. Microwave → embedded computer.

Answer: laptop ; phone ; embedded

Check: Right tool, less pain.

Example 2 — Where is wonderlearn.co.in?

You tap the site on a phone. Where does the page live?

  1. Your phone is the client.
  2. A server computer far away stores the site.
  3. The network carries the request and the page.

Answer: client phone + remote server

Check: You never carry the whole internet in the phone.

Example 3 — Not a supercomputer

Why is a school PC not a supercomputer?

  1. Supercomputers have thousands of processors working together.
  2. They cost crores and sit in labs for weather / research.
  3. A school PC is a personal computer for one student at a time.

Answer: different scale and job

Check: Same idea (IPO), different size.

Common mistakes

Slip Thinking a server “looks like a desktop tower on a teacher’s desk”.

Fix Servers often live in racks in cold rooms, or in the cloud.

You use them without seeing them.

Slip Calling every chip a supercomputer.

Fix Embedded chips are usually small and single-purpose.

Super = huge science, not “any electronics”.

Slip Using only a phone for a long essay.

Fix Possible, but a laptop keyboard is the better tool.

Match device to job.
