Beep! Tap the happy computer!
Python first steps

Can four words make a computer speak?

# Python says hello **Python** is a popular language because it reads almost like English. ```python print("Hello, WonderLearn!") ``` `print` is a function. The words in quotes are a **string** — text. ## Try more ```python print(2 + 3) print("I am", 11, "years old") ``` ## Comments ```python # This line is for humans. Python ignores it. print("Still works") ``` ## Run it Use a school lab install, or an online Python playground your teacher allows. Never paste secret passwords into random websites. > Your first program does not need to be a game. Hello is a victory. ## Output is the first superpower Until a program can *show* something, you cannot tell if it works. `print` is how beginners peek. ### Three Hello-Worlds (same idea) - Python: `print("Hello")` - Scratch: `say Hello` - Web: a page that contains the word Hello ### Quotes vs numbers ``` print("2 + 3") # shows 2 + 3 print(2 + 3) # shows 5 ``` Quotes = treat this as text. No quotes around numbers = do the maths, then show the result. You will use that difference on the next lesson (variables) and in every program after.

By the end of this lesson

Read print("Hello") as output, predict what a two-line print program shows, and spot a missing quote or bracket.

Remember

  • print(...) sends output to the screen.
  • Text needs quotes: print("Hello").
  • Each print usually makes a new line.
  • Python is picky about spelling, quotes and brackets. That pickiness is a gift — it catches slips.
  • Hello World is the first output in almost every language. The idea is output, not the words Hello World.

Worked examples

Cover the answer. Try the steps on paper, then open them.

Example 1 — One line

print("Hello, WonderLearn")

  1. Python looks at print
  2. Sends the text inside quotes to the screen
  3. Screen shows: Hello, WonderLearn

Answer: Hello, WonderLearn

Check: Quotes are not printed (usually).

Example 2 — Two lines

print("Hi") print("there")

  1. First print → Hi
  2. Second print → there on the next line

Answer: Hi there

Check: Two instructions, two lines of output.

Example 3 — Broken quotes

print(Hello) without quotes.

  1. Python looks for a variable named Hello
  2. If there is no such variable, it errors
  3. Fix: print("Hello")

Answer: add quotes for text

Check: Text vs name.

Common mistakes

Slip Writing Print("Hi") with a capital P (in Python).

Fix Python names are case-sensitive. print is lowercase.

Copy the exact word.

Slip print "Hi" without brackets (Python 3).

Fix Python 3 needs print("Hi").

Brackets belong to the call.

Slip Thinking the program failed if it only prints and exits.

Fix A program that prints and ends did its job.

Output was the goal.

Try on paper first

Write the answer, then tap Reveal. These are not the quiz — they are warm-ups.

1. What does print do?

Answer: Shows output on the screen

2. Write a line that prints the word Cat.

Answer: print("Cat")

3. Why quotes around Cat?

Answer: So Python treats it as text, not a variable name

4. Does print("2 + 3") show 5 or the characters 2 + 3?

Answer: The characters 2 + 3 (it is text)
