How do we use AI as a coach, not a crutch?

# Using AI the smart way AI tools can explain a sum, quiz you, or draft a story. They are helpers — **not** a substitute for your brain. ## Smart use - “Explain fractions like I am 10” - “Give me 5 practice questions on nouns” - “Find the bug in this 4-line program” - Ask *why*, not only the final answer ## Unsmart use - Paste the whole exam and submit the AI answer - Believe every fact without checking - Share private family data with a random chatbot ## Your advantage Students who *understand* plus use AI will outrun students who only copy. WonderLearn’s idea is the same: **understand, don’t just memorize.** > If you cannot explain the answer in your own words, you do not own it yet. ## A student contract with AI 1. I ask for a hint or one step, not the finished essay. 2. I check every fact and every number. 3. I close the chat and explain the idea in my own words. 4. I never paste secrets or other people’s private work. 5. I still write the version I submit. If you skip 3, you only practised copying. That is the opposite of WonderLearn. ### Good prompts (copy these) - “Ask me one question to see if I understand like terms.” - “Give me a new two-step equation and wait while I solve it.” - “Explain IPO using a microwave, then I will try an ATM.” ### Bad prompts - “Write my whole project.” - “Just give answers 1 to 20.” - “Here is my password, save my homework.” Understand. Don’t just memorize. Don’t just paste, either.

By the end of this lesson

Use AI as a coach (ask why, then explain it yourself) and list three things you must never paste into a public bot.

Remember

  • AI can draft, quiz you, and explain — it can also be confidently wrong.
  • Use it as a coach, not a crutch: ask why, then close it and explain aloud.
  • Never paste passwords, OTPs, home address, ID photos, or unpublished exam papers.
  • You are still the author. If you cannot explain it, you did not learn it.
  • WonderLearn motto: Understand. Don’t just memorize. That includes not just pasting.

Worked examples

Cover the answer. Try the steps on paper, then open them.

Example 1 — Coach, not ghostwriter

You are stuck on 2x + 3 = 11.

  1. Ask: “Show one step, then stop.”
  2. You do the next step
  3. Then you teach the whole solve to a wall / sibling
  4. If you cannot teach it, ask a different question, not “give the answer”

Answer: one step, then you

Check: The check is still your job.

Example 2 — Wrong with confidence

A bot says 3x = 12 so x = 9.

  1. That is the classic subtract-not-divide bug
  2. You check: 3×9 = 27 ≠ 12
  3. You reject the answer
  4. AI is a student who talks fast — still needs a check

Answer: always verify

Check: Your algebra check habit protects you here.

Example 3 — Secret stuff

A form asks you to paste your school login + password into a “free homework AI”.

  1. Do not
  2. Real school tools will not ask for your password in a chat box on a random site
  3. Close and tell a teacher if it looked official

Answer: never paste secrets

Check: Safety lesson still applies.

Common mistakes

Slip Pasting the whole assignment and submitting the first reply.

Fix You cannot explain it → you did not learn it → exams will show it.

Coach, then close.

Slip Believing a fluent paragraph must be true.

Fix Fluency is not truth. Check numbers and facts.

Same as checking x = 5.

Slip Pasting a classmate’s personal essay into a public bot “to improve it” without asking.

Fix That is their work and maybe their story.

Consent + copyright + kindness.
