How do we know we are right?

# Always check Solving is only half. **Checking** proves it. Solved `2x − 3 = 7` and got `x = 5`? Left side: `2(5) − 3 = 10 − 3 = 7` Right side: `7` Equal → solution is correct. If they disagree, you made a slip. Do not erase the whole page — find the line where both sides stopped matching. > Exam habit: write “Check:” and one line. Examiners love it. You will love it when it saves marks. ## Checking is the second half of solving A finished bookwork should look like: ``` 2x − 3 = 7 2x = 10 x = 5 Check: 2(5) − 3 = 7 ✓ ``` Without the last line you have a guess with extra writing. ### When the check fails 1. Recompute the check — maybe the check had the slip 2. If the check is right and still fails, walk up your steps 3. The first line where left ≠ right (after a legal move) is the bug ### Exam habit Even if you are sure, write Check. It is the cheapest mark-saver in algebra.

By the end of this lesson

Check a solved equation by substituting into the original, and know what to do if the sides disagree.

Remember

  • Solving finds a candidate. Checking proves it.
  • Substitute into the original equation, not into a middle line only.
  • If both sides match, the solution is correct.
  • If they do not match, find the line where the two sides stopped being equal.
  • Write the word Check: and one line. Examiners like it. It saves marks.

Worked examples

Cover the answer. Try the steps on paper, then open them.

Example 1 — A pass

Someone solved 2x − 3 = 7 and got x = 5. Check.

  1. Left: 2(5) − 3 = 10 − 3 = 7
  2. Right: 7
  3. Match → correct.

Answer: Correct

Check: Always show this line.

Example 2 — A fail

Someone got x = 4 for 2x − 3 = 7. Check.

  1. Left: 2(4) − 3 = 8 − 3 = 5
  2. Right: 7
  3. 5 ≠ 7 → not a solution.

Answer: Incorrect

Check: Go back; the first undo was probably the slip.

Example 3 — Check a two-step

x = 3 in 5x + 2 = 17

  1. 5(3) + 2 = 15 + 2 = 17
  2. Matches.

Answer: Correct

Check: Check the original, not only 5x = 15.

Common mistakes

Slip Checking 2x = 8 instead of 2x + 3 = 11.

Fix A middle line can be where you already made the error.

Original only.

Slip If it fails, erasing everything in panic.

Fix Compare line by line until the sides diverge.

Debug, do not restart blindly.

Slip Thinking checking is only for weak students.

Fix It is how mathematicians work.

Proof for this level is the substitution check.

Try on paper first

Write the answer, then tap Reveal. These are not the quiz — they are warm-ups.

1. Check x = 6 in x + 5 = 11. Pass or fail?

Answer: Pass

6+5=11.

2. Check x = 2 in 3x = 9. Pass or fail?

Answer: Fail

6 ≠ 9. (Correct x = 3.)

3. To check x = 5 in 2x − 3 = 7 compute…

Answer: 2(5) − 3 and compare with 7

4. If sides disagree, the number is…

Answer: Not a solution
