What if we open the box and look?
By the end of this lesson
Substitute a given number (including negatives) into an expression using brackets, then evaluate.
Remember
- Substitution = replace the letter with a number.
- Use brackets, especially for negatives: 2(−3) not 2−3.
- If x = 4, then 2x + 1 = 2(4) + 1 = 9.
- If x = −3, then 2x + 1 = 2(−3) + 1 = −5.
- Several letters: replace each one, then compute.
Worked examples
Cover the answer. Try the steps on paper, then open them.
Example 1 — Positive plug-in
Evaluate 3x − 2 when x = 5.
- 3(5) − 2
- 15 − 2 = 13
Answer: 13
Check: Brackets show the replace.
Example 2 — Negative plug-in
Evaluate 3x − 2 when x = −4.
- 3(−4) − 2
- −12 − 2 = −14
Answer: −14
Check: 3 × −4 is −12, then minus 2.
Example 3 — Two letters
3a + b with a = 2, b = 5
- 3(2) + 5
- 6 + 5 = 11
Answer: 11
Check: Replace both, then one calculation.
Common mistakes
Slip x = −3 in 2x written as 2 − 3 = −1.
Fix 2x = 2(−3) = −6.
The 2 multiplies the whole −3.
Slip Replacing only the first x if x appears twice.
Fix Every x gets the same number.
Same box, same number.
Slip Doing 2x + 1 with x = 4 as 2 + 4 + 1.
Fix 2x is 2 times 4 = 8, then +1 = 9.
Hidden multiply first.
