x 3 x + 3 = 8 Come play with numbers!
Simplifying

Why does the number outside visit every guest?

# Brackets and expand (start) A number outside a bracket multiplies **every** term inside. `3(x + 2) = 3x + 6` `2(x − 5) = 2x − 10` This is the **distributive** idea: sharing the 3 with each friend in the bracket. ## Then you may collect `3(x + 2) + x = 3x + 6 + x = 4x + 6` ## Not yet We are **not** doing `(x + 2)(x + 3)` in this starter path. One small door at a time. ## The outside number visits every guest Picture 3 packets. Each packet holds a pencil and an eraser. `3(x + 2)` if x is “pencil” and 2 is “eraser-value”: - 3 pencils → `3x` - 3 erasers → `6` - Total `3x + 6` ### Arrow habit (draw this once) ``` 3 ( x + 2 ) ↘ ↘ 3x 6 ``` ### What we are not doing yet `(x + 2)(x + 3)` is a later door (two brackets). Do not leap there. Master one number outside first.

By the end of this lesson

Expand a single bracket a(b + c) = ab + ac, then collect like terms if needed.

Remember

  • The number outside multiplies every term inside.
  • 3(x + 2) = 3x + 6.
  • 2(x − 5) = 2x − 10.
  • 4(y + 1) = 4y + 4.
  • Then you may collect: 3(x + 2) + x = 4x + 6.

Worked examples

Cover the answer. Try the steps on paper, then open them.

Example 1 — Share the 3

3(x + 2)

  1. 3 × x = 3x
  2. 3 × 2 = 6
  3. 3x + 6

Answer: 3x + 6

Check: The 3 visits every guest.

Example 2 — Share a minus inside

2(x − 5)

  1. 2 × x = 2x
  2. 2 × (−5) = −10
  3. 2x − 10

Answer: 2x − 10

Check: The minus belongs to the 5.

Example 3 — Expand then collect

3(x + 2) + x

  1. 3x + 6 + x
  2. 4x + 6

Answer: 4x + 6

Check: 3x + x = 4x.

Common mistakes

Slip 3(x + 2) = 3x + 2

Fix The 3 must also multiply 2 → 3x + 6.

Every inside term.

Slip 2(x − 5) = 2x − 5

Fix 2 × 5 = 10, so 2x − 10.

Multiply the 5 too.

Slip 3(x + 2) + x = 3x + 2x + 2 or 3x + 6x

Fix Expand first: 3x + 6 + x = 4x + 6.

Do not invent extra multiplies.

Try on paper first

Write the answer, then tap Reveal. These are not the quiz — they are warm-ups.

1. 4(x + 3) =

Answer: 4x + 12

2. 5(y − 2) =

Answer: 5y − 10

3. 2(n + 4) + n =

Answer: 3n + 8

4. 3(a + 1) − 2 =

Answer: 3a + 1
