Simplifying

Can we tidy a messy expression?

# Collect like terms Simplifying means **tidy**, not “make a number at all costs”. `5x + 2 + 3x − 6` Group x-terms: `5x + 3x = 8x` Group numbers: `2 − 6 = −4` Result: `8x − 4` ## With several letters `2a + 3b + a − b = 3a + 2b` Leave unlike terms separate. > Underline all x-terms in one colour (or all a-terms). Your eyes will stop mixing bananas and apples. ## A tidy method that never mixes families 1. Rewrite the expression with every sign in front of its term `5x + 2 + 3x − 6` → `(+5x) (+2) (+3x) (−6)` 2. Circle (or underline) the same leftovers 3. Add those coefficients 4. Write the families in a calm order: letters alphabetically, constant last `8x − 4` ### Order of writing `3a + 2b` is easier to mark than `2b + 3a` (both correct). Prefer alphabetical. ### What “simplified” means here No like terms left uncombined. Brackets gone if we already expanded. That is enough.

By the end of this lesson

Tidy an expression by collecting like terms, including several letters and negative coefficients.

Remember

  • Simplifying means tidy — not “force a single number”.
  • Group the same letter-parts, then group the constants.
  • 5x + 2 + 3x − 6 = 8x − 4.
  • 2a + 3b + a − b = 3a + 2b. Leave unlike terms separate.
  • Underline each family (all x, all y, all numbers) before you add.

Worked examples

Cover the answer. Try the steps on paper, then open them.

Example 1 — One letter + numbers

5x + 2 + 3x − 6

  1. x-terms: 5x + 3x = 8x
  2. numbers: 2 − 6 = −4
  3. 8x − 4

Answer: 8x − 4

Check: Do not write 4x or 8x + 4.

Example 2 — Two letters

2a + 3b + a − b

  1. a-terms: 2a + a = 3a
  2. b-terms: 3b − b = 2b
  3. 3a + 2b

Answer: 3a + 2b

Check: Unlike stay unlike.

Example 3 — Negatives

7y − 2 − 4y + 9

  1. y: 7y − 4y = 3y
  2. numbers: −2 + 9 = 7
  3. 3y + 7

Answer: 3y + 7

Check: Keep each sign with its term.

Common mistakes

Slip 5x + 3x − 2 = 6x or 8x + 2

Fix 8x − 2.

Add x-coefficients; keep the −2.

Slip 2a + 3b = 5ab

Fix Unlike. Leave 2a + 3b.

Same trap as the like-terms lesson.

Slip 4y − y = 4

Fix 4y − 1y = 3y.

y means 1y, not “delete the letter”.

1. 4x + x − 3 =

Answer: 5x − 3

2. 6 + 2n + 1 =

Answer: 2n + 7

3. 5p + 2q − p + q =

Answer: 4p + 3q

4. 10m − 10 − m =

Answer: 9m − 10
