Ch. 1: Representation of Geographical Features
Maps are a superpower — not a snooze. Learn map elements, scale, directions, symbols, globe vs sketch vs plan, and follow a river from mountain to sea with a full interactive Map Explorer lab.
Map Explorer Lab
Geography is a superpower: find places, measure distances, read secret map codes, and follow a river from mountain to sea. Tap every tab and play.
Elements of a map — tap the glowing spots
Every real map has these “must-have” parts. Click labels on the mini-map.
Title · Scale · Direction · Key/Legend · Projection · Symbols — tap any label.
- Title — what the map is about (top)
- Scale — real distance vs map distance
- Direction — North arrow (find places)
- Key / Legend — meaning of colours & signs
- Projection — curved Earth on a flat sheet
- Symbols — roads, rivers, temples…
Compass game — know your directions
Earth spins west → east. North Pole top, South Pole bottom. Four cardinal + four intermediate directions.
Which direction is between North and East?
N · S · E · W
NE · SE · SW · NW
On maps: North arrow (↑ with N). If no arrow, top = North, bottom = South.
Scale magic — shrink the real world
Scale = Map distance ÷ Ground distance. Example: 1 cm on map = 1 km on ground.
5 cm on map = 5 km on ground
Small area · lots of detail · e.g. 1 cm = 1 km · topo maps
Large area · less detail · e.g. 1 cm = 100 km · atlas / wall maps
Types of maps — purpose & content
Mountains, plains, plateaus, rivers, lakes, oceans
Countries, states, boundaries, capitals
One theme: rainfall, crops, population, languages…
Map · Globe · Sketch · Plan — pick the right tool
Flat · to scale · key · foldable
3D Earth · true shape · rotates
Rough · memory · not to scale
Detail of small area · to scale
Friend visiting your home? → Sketch. Architect building a house? → Plan. Studying India? → Map. Seeing continents spin? → Globe.
| Map | Globe | Sketch | Plan | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| To scale? | Yes | Yes (model) | No | Yes |
| Shape of Earth | Distorted flat | True sphere | — | — |
| Detail | Varies | Limited | Only needed bits | High (small area) |
| Key/legend | Yes | No | Rarely | Often |
Symbol decoder — map secret codes
Conventional signs are the same almost worldwide. Colours also talk: Blue = water Green = forests Yellow = farms White = rocky / barren
Tap a card to reveal what it means on a map.
River journey — mountain to sea 🏔️→🌊
Follow a drop of water. Click stages or press Play.
Where the river begins — often in mountains, hills, a glacier, lake or spring. Example: Bhagirathi from Gangotri glacier.
Fold mountains & block mountains — Earth flexes
- Anticline — rock layers arch upward
- Syncline — rock layers trough downward
- Formed by compression of Earth’s crust
- Faults crack the crust
- Horst — uplifted block = block mountain
- Graben — sunk land = rift valley
