Who is the kind principal of the computer?

# Operating systems An **operating system (OS)** is the main manager. It: - Starts the computer - Shows windows / icons / apps - Talks to keyboard, screen, and Wi-Fi - Keeps files organised - Lets many programs share the CPU fairly ## You may know **Windows**, **macOS**, **Linux** on computers. **Android** and **iOS** on phones. ## Why it matters The same website can open on Windows and Android because the *browser app* and *OS* handle the details for you. ## Good habits - Update the OS when a trusted update appears - Do not install unknown “crack” tools - Shut down properly so files stay safe > The OS is like a kind principal: it keeps every class (app) from grabbing the whole school (CPU) at once. ## Principal of the school The OS is a kind principal: - Lets many classes (apps) share the hall (CPU) fairly - Keeps the register of rooms (files and folders) - Hears the doorbell (keyboard, touch, Wi-Fi) - Sends someone home safely at the end of the day (shut down) ### Multitasking You hear a song and type notes. Two apps appear to run “at once”. The OS is actually slicing time into tiny turns and switching the CPU between them so fast you do not notice. ### Linux is not only for experts Many servers and some school labs run Linux. It is a full OS family (Ubuntu, Fedora…). You do not need to install it today — you only need to know it exists.

By the end of this lesson

List what an OS does, name five common OS products, and describe one good OS habit (update / clean shutdown).

Remember

  • The OS is the main manager: start up, windows/icons, talk to hardware, files, share the CPU.
  • Desktop: Windows, macOS, Linux. Mobile: Android, iOS.
  • The same website can open on different OS because the browser + OS hide the details.
  • Update trusted OS updates. Do not install “crack” tools.
  • Shut down properly so files are not half-written.

Worked examples

Cover the answer. Try the steps on paper, then open them.

Example 1 — Manager’s job list

Name five things the OS does when you open a browser.

  1. Starts the browser process
  2. Gives it RAM and a slice of CPU
  3. Shows its window
  4. Talks to Wi-Fi for it
  5. Lets you save a download into a folder

Answer: resource + window + network + files

Check: You never do those jobs by hand.

Example 2 — Name the family

A school lab PC, an iPhone, a cheap Android phone, a designer’s Mac.

  1. Lab PC — often Windows (sometimes Linux)
  2. iPhone — iOS
  3. Android phone — Android
  4. Mac — macOS

Answer: Windows / iOS / Android / macOS

Check: Brand of device often hints the OS.

Example 3 — Why update?

A security hole is found in an old OS.

  1. Attackers can use the hole.
  2. The company ships a patch.
  3. Installing the update closes the hole.
  4. Ignoring updates leaves the hole open.

Answer: updates patch security and bugs

Check: School rule: install official updates, not random “boosters”.

Common mistakes

Slip Calling Chrome an OS.

Fix Chrome is a browser app. The OS might be Windows or Android underneath.

App ≠ OS.

Slip Installing a “free Windows activator” from a random site.

Fix That is how malware arrives.

Use genuine / school-licensed software.

Slip Yanking the power plug instead of Shut down.

Fix Open files may be half-saved and the disk can corrupt.

Use Shut down or a proper restart.

Try on paper first

Write the answer, then tap Reveal. These are not the quiz — they are warm-ups.

1. Name two desktop OS.

Answer: Windows, macOS, Linux (any two)

2. Name two mobile OS.

Answer: Android, iOS

3. Who talks to the keyboard on your behalf?

Answer: The operating system (with a driver)

4. One reason to update an OS?

Answer: Security fixes / bug fixes
