Can you touch an app?

# System vs application software **Software** is the set of instructions. You cannot “touch” it like a keyboard. ## System software Helps the computer run. Example: **operating system**, device drivers, utility tools (antivirus, disk cleaners). ## Application software Helps *you* do a job: browser, Word, games, calculator, paint, coding editor. ## Firmware Tiny software stored on a chip inside a device (like a router). You rarely see it. ## Remember Without system software, apps have no stage to perform on. Without apps, the stage is empty — you cannot write your essay. > Analogy: OS is the school building. Apps are the classes you attend. ## Two questions that sort any program 1. Does this program exist mainly so the **computer can run**? → system 2. Does this program exist mainly so **a human can finish a job**? → application ### Drivers A printer driver is a translator. The OS speaks to the driver; the driver speaks to that exact printer. Without it, the printer is a silent brick. Drivers are system software. ### Firmware Your router has software burned onto a chip. You do not open it like an app. Still software — just stored differently.

By the end of this lesson

Tell system software from application software, and give two examples of each.

Remember

  • Software = instructions. You cannot unscrew it like a keyboard.
  • System software runs the computer: OS, drivers, utilities (antivirus, disk tools).
  • Application software helps you do a job: browser, Word, games, paint, code editor.
  • Firmware is tiny software on a chip (router, keyboard controller). You rarely see it.
  • Apps need an OS the way classes need a school building.

Worked examples

Cover the answer. Try the steps on paper, then open them.

Example 1 — Sort the bag

Windows, Chrome, antivirus, GTA, a printer driver, Google Docs.

  1. System: Windows, antivirus, printer driver
  2. Application: Chrome, GTA, Google Docs

Answer: 3 system, 3 application

Check: Ask: does it run the machine, or do a human job?

Example 2 — School analogy

OS is the building. Apps are the classes.

  1. Without the building, classes have nowhere to meet.
  2. Without classes, the building is empty — you cannot write an essay.
  3. You need both.

Answer: OS + apps

Check: A new laptop with only an OS still needs apps for school work.

Example 3 — Can you touch it?

Word vs keyboard.

  1. Keyboard: hardware (touch).
  2. Word: software (instructions).
  3. You see Word on the screen, but you cannot pick it up.

Answer: hardware ; software

Check: If it is a program, it is software.

Common mistakes

Slip Calling Windows an application like Word.

Fix Windows is system software (an OS).

It is the stage, not the play.

Slip Saying software is “the metal parts”.

Fix Metal is hardware.

Software is the recipe.

Slip Thinking a game is system software because it is “important”.

Fix Importance is not the test. A game is an application.

It helps you play, not run the machine.

Try on paper first

Write the answer, then tap Reveal. These are not the quiz — they are warm-ups.

1. Is MS Word system or application software?

Answer: Application

2. Is Android system or application software?

Answer: System (it is an OS)

3. Name one utility (system helper).

Answer: Antivirus / disk cleaner / backup tool

4. Can you unscrew Chrome from a laptop like a key?

Answer: No — it is software
