# Files and folders A **file** is one saved item: `science-notes.docx`, `photo.jpg`, `song.mp3`. A **folder** (directory) is a box that holds files and other folders. ## Name files well Bad: `asdfg.docx` Good: `2026-08-15-science-water-cycle.docx` ## Extensions The ending hints the type: - `.docx` / `.pdf` — documents - `.jpg` / `.png` — pictures - `.mp4` — video - `.py` — Python code - `.html` — web page ## Path `Documents / School / Grade6 / History` is a path — like an address. > Pro move: one folder per subject. Future-you will say thank you during exams. ## Build a school bag on the disk Suggested starter tree: ``` Documents School English Maths Science Computer Projects ``` Put each new file one level deeper than you first think. Shallow trees get messy; one extra folder is cheap. ### Extensions you will meet this year | Ending | Usually | | --- | --- | | .docx .odt .txt | writing | | .pdf | share / print layout | | .pptx | slides | | .xlsx | spreadsheet | | .jpg .png | pictures | | .mp3 .mp4 | sound / video | | .py .html .css | code | Windows may hide extensions. Turn them on in File Explorer so you can see what you are double-clicking.

Worked examples

Example 1 — Good names

Rename asdfg.docx and new final REAL.pptx.

Answer: descriptive names

Check: Spaces are ok; random letters are not.

Example 2 — Read the ending

song.mp3, photo.png, main.py, letter.pdf

  1. mp3 — sound
  2. png — picture
  3. py — Python code
  4. pdf — document that keeps layout

Answer: audio ; image ; code ; document

Check: The extension is a hint, not a decoration.

Example 3 — Path as address

File hw.txt inside Maths inside School inside Documents.

  1. Documents / School / Maths / hw.txt
  2. Each slash (or \ on Windows) is one step into a folder.

Answer: Documents/School/Maths/hw.txt

Check: Same idea as House / Street / City.

Common mistakes

Slip Saving everything on the Desktop as untitled.

Fix You will not find it in a week.

Subject folder + clear name.

Slip Thinking .jpg is a program you install.

Fix It is a picture file. A viewer program opens it.

Extension ≠ application, though they are linked.

Slip Putting 200 photos in the same folder as Python code and essays.

Fix Mix makes search painful.

Separate folders: Photos, Code, Essays.
